Battling through three days of blistering temperatures and sustained winds at the Ross Black Field of Champions, the Barton Community College men's track and field team closed its outdoor campaign Saturday with a fifth-place finish at the 2026 NJCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships hosted by New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico.
The Cougars compiled 56 team points in extending the program's streak to ten consecutive years inside the national top-eight. Host New Mexico Junior College captured the team title with 97 points, edging South Plains College's 93 points, while Iowa Central (72), Indian Hills (60), and Barton rounded out the top-five.
Fifth after Thursday's competition, Barton climbed into fourth following Friday's events, scoring in seven events on the final day across throws and on the track to conclude the three-day national meet with multiple personal bests and program record book movement.

Freshman Ilia Ciui delivered Barton's lone national title of the weekend in commanding fashion Thursday, capturing the hammer throw crown by nearly three feet with a mark of 63.79m (209-3), improving from fourth to third place on Barton's all-time performance list. Jaylon Calder placed eighth at 54.20m (177-10) with DeAndre Bristol narrowly missing scoring in ninth at 51.04m (167-5)
Chavez Penn produced one of Barton's gutsiest performances of the meet in the high jump, battling through injury to clear 2.07m (6-9.50) on just a single attempt height en route to a national runner-up finish. Penn later was forced to scratch from the triple jump competition, entering the meet ranked No. 1 nationally while already owning Barton's eighth-best mark in program history.
Barton's throws group continued to generate major points Saturday in the discus as Calder captured national runner-up honors with a throw of 53.72m (176-3), complementing his already established No. 10 spot on Barton's all-time list. Bristol added a fifth-place finish at 49.48m (162-4) while Gabe Daugherty placed 11th at 46.78m (153-6).
Additional field-event scoring came from Calder placing sixth in the shot put at 16.29m (53-5.25), while Bristol matched his personal best at 15.24m (50-0) to place 12th.
Barton's relay groups also delivered several key performances throughout the meet. On Thursday, the 4x800m relay quartet of Shavan Jarrett, Keandro Gordon, Sergi Gonzalez, and Macdonald Jansen recorded the program's second-fastest time in history at 7:32.79 to place seventh nationally.
Beginning Saturday's track action, the 4x100m relay squad of Trevoy Smith, Colbert, Mack, and Straker placed eighth in 40.48 after posting a season-best 39.84 during preliminaries in just the quartet's second race together this season.
The Cougars later closed the national meet with one of their strongest performances of the season in the 4x400m relay as Simeon Adams, LaMont Johnson, Keandro Gordon, and Furious Trammel combined for a season-best 3:06.04 to place third nationally while moving into seventh on Barton's all-time list. Barton also posted a strong 3:10.98 prelim time behind the quartet of Trevoy Smith, Simeon Adams, Emmanuel Adams, and Trammel.
Individually on the track, Barton produced several personal-best efforts against the deep national field. Nizer Smith delivered a breakout performance in the 110m hurdles, clocking consecutive personal bests with a 13.98 in preliminaries before lowering the mark again to 13.78 in the finals for a fifth-place finish, narrowly missing Barton's all-time top-10 list by just .08 seconds.
Craig Prendrgast added a sixth-place finish in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best 52.16, while Johnson placed sixth in the 400m after running 46.14 during preliminaries before clocking 47.01 in the finals. Johnson had previously recorded Barton's ninth-fastest time earlier in the season, while Simeon Adams, owner of the program's 10th-fastest mark entering the meet, placed 11th overall after narrowly missing the finals with a 46.48 preliminary performance.
Barton's sprint corps also produced several near-scoring and personal-best performances as Devonric Mack ran a personal-best 10.27 in the 100m, Aragorn Straker followed with a personal-best 10.31 in the same event before later clocking a personal-best 20.54 in the 200m, while Dejuan Colbert added a personal-best 10.42 in the 100m.
Additional scoring came from Devon Williams placing sixth in the long jump at 7.41m (24-3.75), later placing 11th in the triple jump with a 14.50m (47-6.75) mark.
In addition to Penn's triple jump withdrawal, the Cougars also endured several narrow misses and unfortunate breaks throughout the weekend, including Trevoy Smith's false start in the 400m hurdles sidelining one of the nation's top-ranked competitors after entering the meet already owning Barton's second-fastest time in program history
