
The Barton Community College women's track and field team won three events this past week in placing 5th at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships hosted by South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.
The Cougars had fifteen scoring performances during the three-day event, resetting six personal best efforts in scoring 76 total points, just five points out of third place. South Plains won the title with 110.33 points with New Mexico Junior College close behind at 108 points. Iowa Central Community College won the battle for third place at 81 points, three points ahead of in-state foe Iowa Western Community College's 78 points and two ahead of the Cougars. Region VI member Cloud County Community College finished in sixth with 72 points as the rest of the twenty-six team total field were significantly down points achieved chart.
Two of Barton's national champions came on the track with Kayan Green taking the 800m title in 2:10.55 with Lashanna Graham winning the 400m hurdles in 58.61. Graham also added a 3rd place finish in the 400m at 54.11 with the pair also helping lead the 4x400m relay team joined by Jayda Dillon and Sasha Brown to a fifth place finish at 3:47.83.
Continuing her challenge of the program shot put record, Ana Da Silva came up nine inches shy of the top mark but did improve her personal and 2nd best ever throw to 16.21m (53-02.25) in closing out her Barton career with the national title.
Nia Robinson led the Cougars' jumping crew with two national runner-up placings and a fourth placing, while contributing to the 4x100m relay team's fifth place. Beginning the week with a second place long jump of 6.12m (20-01.00), Robinson then took second again with a personal best 1.73m (5.08.00) height in Wednesday's high jump to join fellow jumper Annia Ashley's program top ten achievement. Robinson closed out the busy three days with a 4th place in the triple jump at 12.21m (40-00.75). Ashley battled injuries throughout the week, placing 10th in the long jump and 6th in the high jump before bowing out of the triple jump.
Other personal best efforts included Jada Sewell with a 42.36m (139-00) discus throw and 45.35m (148-09) hammer throw to finish 6th and 8th respectively. Ayesha Nelson recorded a personal fastest 13.91 to place 5th in the 100m hurdles ahead of Ashanti Harvey's 8th placing of 14.45 with Dillon clocking a personal best 24.05 in finishing just outside the 200m finals at 9th place.
