As the City of Great Bend is enjoying some of their best sales tax collections ever, it’s a welcomed sign to see communities from around the state come to town this week for the Class 2-1A State Baseball Tournament.

Great Bend Convention & Visitors Bureau Director Christina Hayes said the city tries to put their best foot forward for the two-day tournament.

"Not only do we have the teams staying in hotels, which brings in sales and transient guest tax, but they also eat, shop and play here too," said Hayes. "It's a really great combination. Of course, we love that it's the small towns. Those small communities bring the whole town to cheer on their team."

Fans from St. Mary’s - Colgan, Elkhart, Little River, Valley Falls, Mission Valley, Whitewater-Remington, Colony-Crest and West Elk will travel to Great Bend beginning Thursday, May 26. The first game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Great Bend Sports Complex and concludes Friday evening with the championship game.

Along with the City of Great Bend, the Great Bend Recreation Commission and USD 428 host the tournament.
