GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — The Ryder Cup is staying in Europe, just like always. Europe had a big lead at Marco Simone outside Rome and made sure it capped off a dominant week. Rory McIlroy won his match to become the leading scorer for Europe for the first time. Tommy Fleetwood delivered the winner by driving the 16th green to assure the half-point Europe needed. The Americans were never in this Ryder Cup after falling behind big on the first day. They were coming off a 10-point win at Whistling Straits and thought this might be the year the U.S. ended three decades of losing on European soil.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Frankie Montas earned the win out of the bullpen in his season debut as the Yankees beat the Royals 5-2 on Saturday night. Gleyber Torres drove in a pair of runs during a go-ahead sixth inning for New York. Oswaldo Cabrera, Everson Pereira and Estevan Florial also drove in runs for the Yankees, who improved to 82-79 to clinch their 31st straight winning season with one game to spare. That’s the second-longest streak in Major League history behind their own 39-year run from 1926-64. Kansas City fell to 55-106 and matched the 2005 team for the most losses in a season in club history. Alec Marsh allowed three runs over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for the Royals.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds’ bid to become just the third team to make the playoffs following a 100-loss season ended in game No. 161 when they were eliminated during the seventh inning of a 15-6 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals. Elly De La Cruz had just grounded out for the final out of the top of the seventh when the Marlins (84-76) finished a 7-3 win at Pittsburgh to clinch a wild-card berth. Any drama of scoreboard-watching dissipated when the Reds fell behind 11-0 by the third inning.

DENVER (AP) — Trevor Larnach hit his first career grand slam, one of Minnesota’s four home runs, and the playoff-bound Twins beat the Colorado Rockies 14-6 on Saturday night. Edouard Julien had three hits, including his 16th home run, and Max Kepler and Matt Wallner also went deep for AL Central Division champion Minnesota. Elehuris Montero, Sean Bouchard and Brenton Doyle homered for the Rockies (58-103), who will not win at least 60 games for the first time in the club’s 31-season history.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Miami Marlins are heading back to the playoffs for just the second time in 20 years. Jazz Chisholm hit his 19th home run of the season and Miami grabbed a wild-card spot in the National League with a 7-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Josh Bell drove in three runs for Miami, which relied on seven pitchers to reach the postseason at the end of a 162-game season for the first time since 2003.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Jonathon Brooks rushing for 217 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 3 Texas to a 40-14 win over No. 24 Kansas, which lost standout quarterback Jalon Daniels in pregame warmups with back stiffness. Quinn Ewers passed for 325 yards and ran for two touchdowns. The Longhorns also got another standout game from their defense. Texas held Kansas under 300 total yards and has allowed just three touchdowns over the last three games. Jason Bean started in place of Daniels and passed for 136 yards for Kansas.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Jalon Daniels did not start at quarterback for No. 24 Kansas against No. 3 Texas after leaving the field during pregame warmups. A Kansas team official said Daniels had “back tightness” that the team was trying to treat. He was not immediately ruled out for the game. Jason Bean started for Daniels and completed one pass before the Jayhawks had to punt on their first possession. Daniels also missed the first game this season with back tightness.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Dillon Gabriel passed for 366 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two scores, and No. 14 Oklahoma rolled past Iowa State 50-20 on Saturday night to set up a battle of unbeatens at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas next weekend. Third-ranked Texas did its part by defeating Kansas 40-14 earlier Saturday. Now, the longtime rivals will face off in their game in Dallas as members of the Big 12 before moving to the Southeastern Conference next year. Iowa State's Rocco Becht got off to a hot start, but finished with just 188 yards passing and two interceptions.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Michael Hayes kicked a tiebreaking 49-yard field goal late, and West Virginia ended TCU’s 10-game Big 12 regular-season winning streak with a 24-21 victory over the Horned Frogs. The Mountaineers secured their first 2-0 start in the Big 12 since 2018 by rallying from an emotional scene of teammate Aubrey Burks getting taken off on a cart after having his neck immobilized. Burks was sent to a hospital. West Virginia trailed 21-14 at halftime before scoring the only 10 points after the break. The Mountaineers blocked two potential tying field goals by the Horned Frogs in the final five minutes.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Drae McCray returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, Loic Fouonji blocked a punt for one of his two scores and the Texas Tech offense did the rest in a 49-28 victory over Houston. The Red Raiders won the first Big 12 meeting of the former Southwest Conference foes despite 335 yards passing and four first-half touchdowns from Houston’s Donovan Smith, their former quarterback. Behren Morton threw for two TDs in his first start after Tyler Shough sustained a long-term injury for the third consecutive season with a broken leg in Texas Tech’s league-opening loss at West Virginia last week.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Baylor erased a 35-7 third-quarter deficit, scoring 29 unanswered points and taking the lead on a 25-yard field goal Isaiah Hankins with 1:21 left to play to beat Big 12 newcomer UCF 36-35 in the the Knights’ first conference home game. The 28-point comeback marked the largest comeback in Baylor history.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Kedon Slovis threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns to lead BYU to a 35-27 victory over Cincinnati on Friday night. Chase Roberts piled up a career-high 131 yards on six catches for the Cougars (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) to help them earn their first Big 12 victory. BYU’s offense had four touchdown drives covering five or fewer plays. Emory Jones threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns and added 94 yards on the ground to lead the Bearcats. Cincinnati (2-3, 0-2 Big 12) suffered its third straight loss despite rushing for 242 yards and totaling 498 yards.

UNDATED (AP) — Time to talk about who should be No. 1. Georgia has held the top spot in 15 straight AP Top 25s, dating to the middle of last season when the Bulldogs won a second straight national title. Georgia extended its school-record winning streak to 22 games at Auburn on Saturday, but yet again the Bulldogs didn’t look much like the clear best team in the country. But if not Georgia, who? No. 2 Michigan has been dominant against weak competition. No. 3 Texas might have a case. Neither No. 4 Ohio State nor No. 5 Florida State played this week.
