This summer has been a celebration of the 75th anniversary for the Great Bend Recreation Commission, and the Rec staff is ready to showcase recent renovations to the City Auditorium to continue the celebration. The Rec will hold a Great Bend Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting Thursday at 10 a.m. on Stone Street.
GBRC Director Chris Umphres said the ribbon cutting will be a great way for the public to see the fresh paint project inside the auditorium and will offer friendly competitions.
"We'll have a pickleball station, volleyball, basketball, indoor soccer and disc golf," said Umphres. "We'll set those up. People will come in and test their score. If you hit the basket so many times, if you hit the pickleball so many times, your score will go up. We'll have prizes for those."
The sports competitions will be available inside the auditorium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Renovaa Home Innovation completed the re-painting of the auditorium with more than 100 gallons of paint for a price not to exceed $60,000. New LED lighting will be installed later this month after the Rec Board approved a nearly $19,000 deal from Musco Lighting and up to $11,000 for Hammeke Electric to install the lights.
