On behalf of the Hays Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) announces the fallen officer escort of Sgt. Scott Heimann from Wichita to Hays on Sept. 30. Sgt. Heimann died in the line of duty on Sept. 28.
The escort, to include the Kansas law enforcement and a larger first responder community, will leave Wichita at approximately noon and travel north on I-135 through Salina. They will continue west out of Salina on I-70 to Exit 157.
The escort will enter the city of Hays via south U.S. 183, Exit 157, turning east on 27th Street. They will continue south on Hall Street, east on 13th Street, north on Vine Street, then west on 20th Street to conclude at Hays Memorial Chapel, 1906 Pine Street.
During the escort, motorists traveling along this route may experience delays.
Heimann, 32, was killed early Sunday after being shot by a domestic violence suspect. Funeral services have been set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2 at FHSU's Gross Memorial Coliseum. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
A time has not been provided by KHP but city officials indicate the escort should be arrive in Hays between 2:30 and 3 p.m. This information will be updated as soon as details are confirmed.
