CHICAGO (AP) — Jarred Kelenic had two hits and two RBIs, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 for their fourth straight win. Colson Montgomery homered during a three-hit performance, helping Chicago improve to 15-8 in its last 23 games. Tyler Davis pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his first major league win. At 21-21, the White Sox reached .500 for the first time since they were 2-2 on March 31, 2025. Kansas City finished with five hits in its fifth loss in seven games. Seth Lugo permitted five runs and eight hits in five innings.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Nick Kurtz hit a grand slam, J.T. Ginn pitched six innings of one-run ball and the Athletics beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Wednesday night. Kurtz’ slam got over Victor Scott II’s glove in deep center field to give the A’s the lead for good. It was the third career grand slam for the reigning American League Rookie of the Year, and extended his on-base streak to 36 games. Ginn (2-1) struck out three, walked one, and allowed nine hits. Zack Gelof had a solo homer in the eighth, and Darell Hernaiz had three hits. Henry Bolte had two hits in his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

CHICAGO (AP) — A fan fell into the visiting bullpen at Rate Field in Chicago, causing a delay during Wednesday night's Royals-White Sox game. The Royals had runners on first and second with none out in the fourth inning when the delay occurred. It looked as if stadium workers used a stretcher to transport the fan out of the bullpen area beyond the wall in right field. The White Sox said the fan was taken to a hospital for treatment.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves keep finding new ways to win. It’s all added up to being the first team in the majors to 30 victories. The Braves improved MLB’s top record to 30-13 with another thrilling win, scoring three runs in the eighth inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1. Mike Yastrzemski came the bench to contribute a pinch-hit double that drove in the tie-breaking run, and jack-of-all-trades Mauricio Dubón followed with a two-run homer into the Chicago bullpen that finished off the Cubs. This team is threatening to run away with the NL East before the calendar turns to summer.

UNDATED (AP) — A federal judge has given final approval to a $303 million class-action lawsuit against the NCAA that will pay former volunteer coaches in sports other than baseball a minimum of $5,000. The class of some 7,700 members were volunteer assistants between March 1, 2019, and July 1, 2023. By NCAA rule, they were prohibited from receiving pay or benefits. The rule was rescinded in January 2023 and the lawsuit was filed two months later in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. Judge William B. Shubb on Monday approved an average payment of $27,000 per class member.

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference is backing the Big Ten’s push for a 24-team playoff. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips says coaches and athletic directors reached consensus this week on wanting to double the current College Football Playoff model. Phillips says “when you’re leaving national championship-contending teams and schools out of the playoff, you don’t have the right number.” He pointed to Florida State getting snubbed from a four-team CFP field in 2023 and Notre Dame getting left out of last year’s 12-team model.

NEW YORK (AP) — ESPN’s “College GameDay” will achieve a pair of milestones on its first show of the season. The venerable college football program will be celebrating its 40th season this year. The Sept. 5 show from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, before Lane Kiffin makes his LSU debut against Clemson will be the 500th show on the road. The announcement was made during ESPN’s upfront to advertisers on Tuesday. The first “College GameDay” show that took place from a campus was Nov. 13, 1993, in South Bend, Indiana, before No. 2 Notre Dame hosted top-ranked Florida State. Since then, the show has visited 82 schools in 39 states, as well as kicking off the 2024 season in Ireland when Florida State took on Georgia Tech.

DETROIT (AP) — James Harden scored a playoff-best 30 points and Donovan Mitchell had 21, helping the Cleveland Cavaliers come back from a nine-point deficit late in regulation and beat the Detroit Pistons 117-113 in overtime to take a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Pistons led by 15 points in the first half and 103-94 with two-plus minutes left. The Cavs rallied and pulled into a 103-all tie on Evan Mobley’s free throws with 45.2 seconds left. Cleveland went on a 13-0 run and held Detroit scoreless for five minutes from late in fourth quarter to midway through overtime.

DENVER (AP) — Brett Kulak scored 3:52 into overtime after Nathan MacKinnon tied it late in regulation and the Colorado Avalanche advanced to the Western Conference final with a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Kulak capped a wild comeback for the Avalanche, who trailed 3-0 midway through the second period. Colorado moves on to the conference final for an eighth time since relocating to Denver in 1995-96. The Avalanche will face the winner of Vegas and Anaheim. The Golden Knights lead that series 3-2. With Minnesota up 3-1, Jack Drury scored with 3:33 remaining to set the stage for MacKinnon's goal with 1:23 left. In overtime, Martin Necas took the puck, glided behind the net and back out front, where he found an open Kulak.

UNDATED (AP) — The PWHL’s upcoming draft class is made up of a 235-player pool and, as highly anticipated, headed by five members of the U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning team, including defender Caroline Harvey. The prospect pool is the largest since the PWHL’s inaugural draft totaled 268 in 2023. And this year’s group features 23 players who competed at the Milan Cortina Games. The quality and quantity of talent represents one of the reasons why the eight-team league elected to add as many as four expansion franchises for next season. Detroit, which will host the draft on June 17, has already been announced as a new team, with more to be added in the coming days.
