The City of Great Bend Utilities Department, in partnership with the Kansas Rural Water Association (KRWA), will be conducting sanitary sewer smoke testing for inflow and infiltration (I&I) detection on Aug. 19 at the Great Bend Industrial Complex.
Smoke testing is a widely accepted method used to identify defects in sanitary sewer collection systems, including pipe breaks, illegal connections, defective cleanouts and points where stormwater or groundwater may be entering the system. Identifying and correcting these issues helps reduce unnecessary hydraulic loading on wastewater treatment infrastructure and improves overall collection system performance.
As part of the field portion of the training, a safe, non-toxic, non-staining white smoke will be introduced into designated sections of the sanitary sewer system. Those participating in the training and nearby occupants may observe smoke exiting from roof vents, cleanouts, manholes, the ground surface or other defect locations. This is an expected and normal part of the testing process.
The smoke used is specifically manufactured for sewer system testing and is harmless to people, pets, plants and property. It dissipates quickly and leaves no residue.
If smoke enters a building, it may indicate a dry drain trap, defective plumbing or an improper sewer connection. Occupants are encouraged to pour water into any infrequently used floor drains, sinks, showers or other drains prior to testing.
This opportunity will serve as both an operational field exercise and professional training, incorporating classroom instruction and hands-on field application for utility professionals.
This training event is being coordinated in conjunction with KRWA as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen utility operations, field diagnostics and workforce development across Kansas utilities.
The Great Bend Fire Department, Great Bend Police Department and local emergency dispatch have been notified of the smoke testing activities.
