The apartments are coming, but residents will need a place to park. After several larger agendas, downtown parking will be the primary item on tonight’s Great Bend City Council agenda.

Parking is currently prohibited around the Barton County Courthouse in downtown Great Bend from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Ordinance 3926 was passed in June 1994 in an effort to stop littering downtown. The ordinance restricts parking along either side of Main Street from Lakin to Broadway, and the west side of Kansas Ave. from Lakin to Broadway. The ordinance also restricts parking during those hours along the Courthouse square on Broadway and Lakin. Ordinance 4478, which the counsel will consider tonight, would repeal the 32-year-old ordinance.

Construction of the Lofts at the Zarah is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and a repeal of the ordinance will provide more parking availability in the area.

The council will also consider a temporary street closure on Broadway Ave. between Kansas and Main from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Kiwanis Trunk or Treat event this Saturday. The meeting will also include reports from City Administrator Logan Burns and Public Relations Director Evan Wedel.

Tonight’s Great Bend City Council meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
