Great Bend Post
The Western Athletic Conference rivals looked even on paper. Both Great Bend and Hays entered Tuesday's single varsity game at the Sports Complex with three losses. The Indians scratched across five runs in the first two innings and never looked back, ending Great Bend's win streak at six games in an 8-1 contest.
Hays took advantage of a hit batter, a single, and a pair of passed balls to lead 2-0 after one inning. A triple helped in a 3-run second inning for the Lady Indians.
Great Bend, meanwhile, put runners on to lead off the first two innings. A pair of strikeouts ended the second with a runner in scoring position. The Lady Panthers remained scoreless until Analiz Rivas singled in Paige Thexton in the fifth inning. That would be it for the Great Bend offense.
Braelyn Turned picked up the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on four hits in two innings. She struck out two and walked four. Alyssa McCauley pitched the final five innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Great Bend finished with seven hits, all singles. The freshman McCauley was the lone Lady Panther with two hits. Thexton singled and walked three times out of the leadoff spot.
The Lady Panthers had rattled off six-straight wins after an 0-3 start. They take a 6-4 record to Hays for a doubleheader on Thursday.
