Getting a passport has long required residents to make a few stops. Barton County Register of Deeds Glennda French is taking steps to make her office a one-stop shop for the document. Her office, temporarily located at 1500 Kansas Ave. in Great Bend, now offers passport photo service for $20.
"We didn't have any way to take pictures here in our office," she said. "We had sent people either to Walgreens or Walmart to get them. This year, we thought we would give this a go. It makes it easier for the public to just come here and get it done rather than going to either of the other two places. The system we have, we take the picture, it sends directly to the printer, and prints it right out. It takes about two minutes."
Anyone applying for a passport will need to bring a photo identification like a driver's license or military ID, and bring proof of U.S. citizenship, such as an original birth certificate or naturalization papers. A $35 check or money order must be included for the processing fee. Adult passport books are $130 and cards are $30. For minors, those prices are $100 for a book and $15 for a card.
Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are required for groups of three or more. The deeds office can process passport applications from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
