FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Philadelphia Eagles running back Ja’Quinden Jackson was taken off the field in an ambulance after being injured on the opening kickoff Saturday night in a preseason game against the New England Patriots. The Eagles announced that Jackson had strength and movement in all extremities and had been taken to a hospital for further evaluation. Jackson was on the kickoff team and made the tackle, but he laid motionless after New England’s Lan Larison was tackled at the 25. Trainers rushed in almost immediately as medical personnel from both teams attended to Jackson. They quickly called for a backboard and ambulance.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wyndham Clark lost the lead with a double bogey on the first hole at Bellerive. And then he left Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland and everyone else behind at the BMW Championship. Clark shot a 65 despite a bogey on the final hole. That gives him a five-shot lead going into the final round as the U.S. Open champion goes for his third win this year. McIlroy had three straight birdies late in his round for a 65. Patrick Cantlay shot a 66 in his bold bid to move into the top 30 and qualify for the Tour Championship.
PHOENIX (AP) — JJ Bleday of the Cincinnati Reds hit for the cycle Saturday night in his first four at-bats against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cincinnati left fielder doubled in the first inning, tripled in the third and singled in the fourth. He homered to right on the first pitch from Arizona’s Zack Littell in the sixth inning, giving the Reds an 8-2 lead. It was the eighth cycle in franchise history dating to 1890. Bleday is the first Cincinnati player to hit for a cycle since Elly De La Cruz on June 23, 2023, against Atlanta. There were three previous cycles in the majors this year.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tarik Skubal started shaky but shone to earn his first win since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in a blockbuster deal ahead of the trade deadline. He beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 as the Dodgers won their fifth in a row. The two-time Cy Young Award winner struck out 11 batters, just one off his season best. After a rough first inning, Skubal retired 20 of his final 23 batters. He allowed three runs and five hits with one walk. Skubal says his execution was good and he feels confident commanding the ball.
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Erling Haaland’s famed flowing locks are no more. The Manchester City superstar has a new hairstyle for the new Premier League season: A buzz cut that went viral on social media on Sunday ahead of the team’s opening match against Bournemouth. The Norway striker has become one of the most easily distinguishable sport stars because of his long hair. In a video on his YouTube channel, Zlatan Ibrahimovic asked if Haaland had “lost a bet” when the City striker showed him his new hairstyle.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson fired back at his detractors, calling the booing he heard during a home exhibition game against Buffalo “disrespectful” and “personal.” Watson has a complicated relationship with Cleveland fans because of injuries, off-field issues and a $230 million contract. He was booed loudly during the second half of the 31-7 loss. Watson completed just 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and threw an interception. He came off the bench because the Browns started Shedeur Sanders, who is competing with Watson for the starting job. Watson also mentioned that fans cheered when he tore his Achilles tendon in 2024.
SEATTLE (AP) — Well before Kade Anderson threw his first MLB pitch, the Seattle Mariners’ prized left-hander took some time to make a few fans’ days. The 22-year-old Anderson got done with his warmup routine on Saturday quicker than usual before his much-ballyhooed big league debut against the Chicago Cubs. So, rather than ignore the young fans who watched his bullpen session, Anderson scribbled his signature a handful of times before the Mariners beat the Cubs 5-4 in walk-off fashion.
NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams will team up with Carlos Alcaraz to create a powerhouse mixed doubles pair in her return to the U.S. Open. The U.S. Tennis Association announced Saturday that Williams and Alcaraz had been given a wild card into the tournament. The mixed doubles main draw begins Tuesday. It will be Williams’ first time playing at the U.S. Open since 2022. She returned to tennis this summer. Alcaraz announced this week he would return to defend his U.S. Open singles title after being sidelined since April with a right wrist injury. Williams isn't planning to play singles in New York.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani faced teammate Will Smith in live batting practice. There's no definitive timeline for Ohtani to return to pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ohtani threw 30 pitches and ended the session with a thumbs-up. Ohtani hasn't pitched since July 3 due to left knee soreness. Meanwhile, All-Star outfielder Andy Pages went on the injured list Saturday with a left hand fracture. The team recalled outfielder Alek Thomas from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Thomas joined the Dodgers on May 12 via trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
ZANDVOORT, Netherlands (AP) — A heavy crash for Max Verstappen brought out the red flag to stop the Dutch Grand Prix as the four-time champion’s home Formula 1 race lasted less than a lap. Verstappen was running seventh when he tried to correct a slide into the final corner of the opening lap, and instead speared into the barrier opposite. His car then slid back across the track into the other wall. With the wrecked Red Bull car in the middle of the track and debris strewn around, the red flag was soon shown
