The City of Great Bend has received approval from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for improvement plans at Heizer Park, and city officials expect the project to be completed next fall. The project will be a $361,260 undertaking.
City Administrator Logan Burns said the improvements will include a Musco mini-pitch double soccer court system, restroom facility, upgrades to the sand volleyball and basketball court and a 55-yard by 80-yard soccer field with new netting.
"The last thing we'll be doing is irrigating the entire park," said Burns. "We'll have a September 30, 2025 deadline to complete all of that work. We're going through all of the scheduling done with our subcontractors. I'm excited for this project."
The city will partner with Barton Community College’s carpentry department to construct shade structures at Heizer. Great Bend has approved contracts with Ramirez Construction, Superior Sprinklers and CXT Restrooms to assist with the project.
Great Bend is contributing $200,000 to the project and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is providing a $161,260 grant.
