Cleanup continues around Great Bend and Barton County following the July 16 storm that produced high winds and hail. Barton County Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby reminds citizens that debris and waste needs to be separated before being disposed of at the Barton County Landfill.

"Separate the yard and garden waste, construction, appliances, and electronics," she said. "I know most of it's going to be yard debris and construction, but I do know some people personally where windows were broken out and maybe furniture and things might have gotten wet or were damaged. If they had any little sheds outside that were damaged, obviously the household hazardous waste needs to be separated as well and brought out either at one of our collections, or they can set up an appointment any time and bring it out."

Hamby said not separating household hazardous waste can lead to serious chemical reactions or possible fires. Appliances and electronics need to be separated so they may be recycled. The Barton County landfill does not accept any yard or garden waste.

The city of Great Bend is helping with cleanup for trees and limbs on Monday, July 24. The city asks that limbs be placed near the curb by 8 a.m. If piles are inaccessible, they will be left. Limbs should be cut to six feet or shorter. City staff will make only one pass by each property for the pickup.
