LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, says he's retiring at the end of this season, capping an 18-year career all spent with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 37-year-old left-hander will make his final regular-season start at Dodger Stadium on Friday night against the San Francisco Giants. Kershaw, an 11-time All-Star and 2014 NL MVP, is in his 18th major league season, all with the Dodgers. He won World Series championships in 2020 and 2024. Kershaw has a career record of 222-96 and 15 shutouts, leading active Major League players. His 2.54 ERA is the lowest of any pitcher in the live ball era since 1920.

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Titleholder Arsenal will start its Women’s Champions League defense with games against record eight-time winner OL Lyonnes, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the new league-phase format. The expanded 18-team draw in the format used by the men's Champions League was made Friday. Barcelona, which reached the past five finals and won three, got a slate of six opponents including Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Champions League debutant Manchester United will have a tricky first campaign with OL Lyonnes, Wolfsburg, PSG and Juventus among its opponents. The 54-game league phase starts Oct. 7 and ends Dec. 17.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Kylian Mbappé has started the season in fine scoring form for leader Real Madrid which will host undefeated Espanyol in the Spanish league on Saturday. Espanyol is in third place at just two points behind Madrid, which has won all four of its La Liga games. Barcelona is second, tied on points with Espanyol, before hosting fifth-placed Getafe at its 6,000-seat Estadi Johan Cruyff on Sunday.

TOKYO (AP) — Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone holds the world record in the 400-meter hurdles and took a giant step closer to setting it in the 400 flat at world championships. Would she ever consider racing in both if the schedule allowed? She acknowledged there's been a lot of talk about doubles but says it's not a matter of whether it would be possible, but whether she would want to do it. Olympic oganizers in years past have adjusted schedules on the track program to give greats like Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix a chance to double in their best races.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and Terrel Bernard intercepted Tua Tagovailoa with three minutes left to secure the Buffalo Bills’ 31-21 win over the Miami Dolphins. James Cook had 108 yards rushing and a 2-yard TD as the Bills continued their dominance of Miami. Buffalo has won seven straight and 14 of the past 15, including playoffs, against its AFC East rival. The Dolphins fell to 0-3 and coach Mike McDaniel will likely face more questions about his job security. Allen finished 22 of 28 for 213 yards and improved his record to 14-2 over Miami.

LONDON (AP) — Arsenal has announced the surprise departure of vice chairman Tim Lewis as part of a major reshuffle of the club’s board to inject “fresh thinking and energy” in its pursuit of trophies. Arsenal hasn’t won any major silverware since 2020 and just spent approximately 250 million pounds ($335 million) on new players to strengthen the squad. The 62-year-old Lewis played a key role alongside manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta in overseeing that spending spree. Lewis has advised Arsenal’s ownership, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, since 2007 and was the vice chair for the past 2 1/2 years having joined the board in 2020. In the reshuffle, managing director Richard Garlick has taken up the role of CEO.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona says its upcoming Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain will be played at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, its home for the previous two seasons. Barcelona had hoped to return to a newly renovated Camp Nou at the start of this season but delays in construction have forced it to play elsewhere. Barcelona is returning to the 55,000-seat Olympic Stadium after it had been forced to face Valencia in its first home game of the Spanish league season at its tiny 6,000-seat Estadi Johan Cruyff. European champion PSG will visit Barcelona on October 1 in the second round of matches in the league phase of the Champions League.

The NFL said in a training video to officials that the Philadelphia Eagles should have been penalized for at least one false start when they used the tush push against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2. Ramon George, the NFL’s vice president of officiating training and development, highlighted a missed false start by Eagles right guard Tyler Steen on a third-and-1 with 5:34 left in the third quarter and Philadelphia leading 20-10. The Eagles won the Super Bowl rematch 20-17.

Marcus Rashford proved the perfect replacement for Lamine Yamal in Barcelona’s 2-1 win at Newcastle in the Champions League and Kevin De Bruyne watched mostly from the sideline as Napoli lost 2-0 at his former club Manchester City. Rashford got a start on his return to England because of an injury to Yamal and scored both of Barcelona’s goals at St. James’ Park. The second was a long-range piledriver. De Bruyne was back at the club where he spent 10 years before an emotional farewell in May but his Etihad Stadium return lasted 26 minutes before he was substituted following a red card for teammate Giovanni Di Lorenzo. City's goals came from Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku.

TOKYO (AP) — Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has become the first woman in nearly 40 years to crack 48 seconds in the 400 meters. She timed 47.78 in an historically fast one-lap race at the world championships in Tokyo. McLaughlin-Levrone had company. Second-place finisher Marileidy Paulino clocked 47.98 on the rain-slickened track. They were the second and third-fastest times in history, behind only the 47.60 run by East Germany’s Marita Koch in 1985. That's one of the last remaining vestiges of an Eastern Bloc doping system that was exposed decades after it ended.
