While the addition of another dog at the Great Bend Police Department is not to bring in a friend for K-9 Menta, the new four-legged officer will provide a more flexible schedule for Menta and her handler.

Police Chief Steve Haulmark said Officer Matthew Barker and newly acquired K-9 Nico will travel to Texas in December for training.

"The handlers and K-9s are working a beat in a patrol car, but they'll respond if need be for their K-9 partner," said Haulmark. "We're going to have them on different shifts so they compliment each other. They won't be working at the same time."

Nico is also a Belgian Malinois breed. Haulmark said Menta is around six years old and still in good health.
