When it comes to street maintenance and repairs, there will always be
more to do. Each year, the City of Great Bend tackles a large resurfacing
project along with smaller chip and crack sealing assignments.
When the city announced the 2023 street resurfacing project would focus on a
two-block stretch of McKinley Street and roads in the southeast portion of
town, Great Bend City Council member Lindsey Krom-Craven asked Public Works
Director Jason Cauley how the city prioritizes their choices. Krom-Craven
referenced a section of east 24th Street that was in bad shape.
"McKinley is that high-volume street," said Cauley. "I know 24th also has a lot of volume on it, but due to the amount of volume McKinley has is why we prioritized that street this year."
The section of 24th Street in question is between the 281 Bypass and
Frey Street. Cauley said the water department had the utility cut along 24th
Street. Once spring time arrives, Cauley said the city will acquire asphalt for a hot mix to make further repairs.
"Our street crews will come in and do some more repairs on that," said Cauley. "I know there are some other potholes that we will repair with our street crews. We'll try to get that street by a little bit longer until we can get in and have it done as a full-depth reconstruction project."
The $925,000 street resurfacing project this year will include 13 blocks and
will be handled by Venture Corporation and is set to begin this summer.
