Forward motion continues on the new childcare facility in Hoisington. USD 431 is giving land behind Roosevelt Elementary School to the Advancing Barton County Childcare (ABCC) committee for the new building. First, an old modular behind the school must be removed. Superintendent Patrick Crowdis presented the bid for the work to the board of education Monday night.

"We did get an estimate from Stone Sand Company to go ahead and demolish, backfill, and move the block that's underneath that," he said. "That estimate came out around $4,000."

The district will try to schedule the removal for spring break. Roosevelt staff uses the modular for laundry services, and Crowdis said the district is working out a solution for the washer and dryer in the interim. Last spring, ABCC announced it had received a $2.23 million grant to use toward childcare in the county. The new facility in Hoisington is expected to serve up to 59 children.

Prior to that vote, the board swore in all five winners from the November general election, including newcomers Julia Debes and Kevin Patterson. The board elected Becky Mooney as board president.
