Panther bowlers wrap up regular season in Hays

The Lady Panther bowling team will have some momentum heading into the postseason to defend its Class 5A state championship. Thursday in Hays, the Lady Panthers scored all 13 points to secure the Western Athletic Conference championship. The boys defeated Hays 11-2 in WAC standings to finish third in the league.

The Lady Panthers again had four of the top-five series on the day. Zoey Mayberry rolled final games of 234 and 217 to take first place with a high-series of 643. Kaylin Wahlmeier stayed over 200 all day, peaking with a 212 final game to placed second with a 624 series. Emilee Nelson bowled final games of 176 and 178 to take third by a single pin with a 492 series. Paige Heine peaked with a 179 middle game to place fifth with a 484 series. Brooklynn Mayberry rolled a 401 series, and Rionna Rodriguez shot a 344. The girls won all four Baker games, including a 221-147 performance in the second game.

The Great Bend girls tallied 98 WAC points to win the league title. Garden City finished second with 81 points, and Dodge City finished a distant third with 45 points. Five Lady Panthers earned All-WAC honors. Wahlmeier's 202 average led the league, and Zoey Mayberry finished second with a 183 average. Nelson averaged a 167 for sixth, Brooklynn Mayberry placed seventh with a 155, and Heine finished 10th with a 152 average.

On the boys' side, sophomore Joshua Manning closed out the regular-season strong with a second place finish at home and a win at Hays Thursday. Manning rolled final games of 196 and 207 for the high-series at 575. Daegan Miller was headed for the easy win with games of 215 and 215 before falling off to a 123 to place second with a 548 series. Brantley Vsetecka finished strong with a 189 game to secure fifth with a 524 series. Kayden Detrick rolled a 202 in his final game for a 467 series. Quinten Miller finished at 415, and Keaton Wahlmeier rolled a 362 series. The Panthers and Indians split the four Baker games.

The Garden City boys scored 98 points to win the WAC title. Dodge City placed second with 71 points, and Great Bend beat Hays by 13 points to finish third with 40 points. Garden City's Kaden Strasser averaged a 224 in WAC competition to win the individual title by three pins. Miller earned All-WAC honors for Great Bend after placing 11th in the league with a 175 average. Vsetecka claimed the final all-league spot with a 173 average.

The Panther bowlers head to Hutchinson on Thursday for regional action.
