The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce officially launched its “Elevate GBK Beyond Today” Capital Campaign on Thursday, February 6, at the Best Western Courtyard, marking the beginning of a transformative five-year strategic plan. The event welcomed more than 80 attendees, including business leaders, community stakeholders, and campaign supporters eager to secure a bright future for Great Bend.

Chamber President & CEO Megan Barfield, alongside Chairman of the Board Rob Bauer, led the evening’s program, unveiling a vision to secure the Chamber's role in strengthening the local economy through five targeted initiatives: Workforce Development; Business & People Retention; Membership Development & Support; Business & Community Marketing; and Business Advocacy.

“This evening, we’re here to share our vision for growth and the detailed plan we’ve developed to pave the way for where we are headed,” said Barfield. "Our fundraising campaign is a crucial investment in the future success of our local businesses and community, ensuring that the Chamber can continue providing valuable support and resources. The overwhelming support we’ve already received highlights the strength of our community and its commitment to a thriving business environment."

Chairman Rob Bauer highlighted the extensive groundwork laid in preparation for the campaign, including over 60 stakeholder interviews and the contributions of more than 70 volunteers from the Chamber’s membership to build and refine the plan.

Serving as honorary co-chairs for the campaign are Rob and Andrea Bauer, Barry and Monica Bowers, Mark and Melanie Calcara, Sheryl Cheely, Mike and Linda Johnson, Mark and Leslie Mingenback, Kathering Opie, Brad and Sarah Shirer, Dr. Perry and Krista Smith, and Terry and MelEesa Stueder, whose leadership and commitment to Great Bend’s business community have been instrumental in shaping this initiative. Their support underscores the vital role of collaborative investment in driving long-term economic growth.

“This roadmap is built around five core initiatives,” Bauer explained, referencing the campaign’s strategic focus areas. “We don’t intend to duplicate efforts but to align with our community partners to implement effective solutions that support our members and the broader business community.”

The campaign, with a fundraising goal of $1,000,000 over five years, has already secured 75% of its target, with $730,500 pledged by more than 30 businesses and individuals before the public launch. Barfield emphasized the importance of continued engagement, urging attendees to invest in the campaign, advocate for its mission, and partner with the Chamber to shape Great Bend’s future.

A highlight of the evening included a keynote address by Great Bend native and entrepreneur Jeremy Rusco, who underscored the impact of community investment and leadership. Rusco is the founder of Dynamic Discs and the owner of Champion's Landing in Emporia, KS. A trailblazer in the disc golf industry, Rusco has been instrumental in establishing Emporia as the "disc golf capital of the world."

With momentum building and strong backing from local business leaders, the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce is poised to drive meaningful progress through the “Elevate GBK Beyond Today” initiative.
