The USD 428 Board of Education ran the gamut of the profession during Wednesday's luncheon at Jefferson Elementary School. After seeing and hearing about Thanksgiving projects from several students, the board entered into a brief executive session to discuss student discipline.

Once the open meeting resumed, the board appointed Clerk of the Board John Popp as the hearing officer to hear appeals in student extended-term suspension or expulsion cases for the 2023-24 school year.

"If we have a student who is long-term suspended or expelled, the parent and student have the opportunity to appeal it to the board of education, and the board designated me as their hearing officer in that case," Popp said. "It's something we will start doing every year in our meeting at the beginning of the year in July."

The resolution states that, by statute, the USD 428 Board of Education is authorized to hear appeals for extended-term suspensions or expulsions, and that the board is authorized to appoint an officer to hear appeals on behalf of the board.
