Eight of the top 10 teams in the AP Top 25 poll either had the day off or faced easy opponents on Saturday. No. 6 Oregon and No. 8 Oklahoma were exceptions, playing against ranked conference foes. Oregon beat No. 16 USC 42-27, and Oklahoma improved to 9-2 with a 17-6 win over No. 23 Missouri. Oregon is tied with Texas Tech at No. 6 in the AP poll and is No. 7 in the College Football Playoff rankings. Oklahoma ranks No. 8 in both. No. 15 Georgia Tech lost at home to Pittsburgh and is now unlikely to make the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — No. 13 Utah's College Football Playoff hopes are still alive after a wild 51-47 victory over Kansas State. The Utes rallied from a 12-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter. Devon Dampier threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, including a go-ahead 1-yard score with 56 seconds left. The game turned on an unusual play. After KSU took a 47-35 lead on Joe Jackson’s third rushing touchdown of the game, the Wildcats went for 2, but Utah’s Tao Johnson intercepted a tipped ball and returned it to the Kansas State end zone for 2 points. Jackson rushed for a school-record 293 yards.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Max Verstappen has a fifth consecutive Formula 1 championship in reach after winning the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The disqualifications of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri for failing inspection have shaken up the standings. Verstappen now trails Norris by just 24 points with two races left. The FIA disqualified the McLaren drivers for not meeting skid wear requirements. Verstappen's victory marks his second win in Las Vegas and his 69th career win. Despite his dislike for the event's focus on showmanship, Verstappen excelled on the track. The championship race continues in Qatar next week.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Lewis Hamilton expressed disappointment after finishing eighth in the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite moving up from the back of the pack to fifth during the race, he found little comfort in the result. Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 champion, has struggled this season after moving from Mercedes to Ferrari. Neither he nor teammate Charles Leclerc have won a race this year. Ferrari's performance has dropped in the constructors' standings, drawing criticism from executive chairman John Elkann. Hamilton's recent struggles have sparked speculation about his future in the sport. He continues to search for answers.
GURGL, Austria (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin dominated another women’s World Cup slalom as the American ski star made it two convincing wins from two races in the discipline in the Olympic season. Shiffrin posted the fastest time in both runs to finish 1.23 seconds ahead of second-place Lara Colturi, the Italian prodigy competing for Albania. The pair also went 1-2 in the first slalom of the season a week ago in Finland. Slalom world champion Camille Rast of Switzerland trailed by 1.41 in third. Shiffrin said “I had to push so hard."
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Rose Lavelle scored in the 80th minute and Gotham FC beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 to win their second National Women’s Soccer League championship. Second-half substitute Bruninha drove into the Spirit box on the left wing and sent the ball across to Lavelle, whose left-footed shot sailed past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury into the bottom corner. It is the first NWSL championship title for Lavelle, who had previously scored in the 2023 final when she was playing or the Seattle Reign against Gotham in a 2-1 loss.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The University of Alabama at Birmingham says a football player stabbed two teammates Saturday morning hours before the game against the University of South Florida. UAB says both wounded players are in stable condition. A suspect is in custody. The university has not released the names of those involved. County jail records show offensive lineman Daniel Mincey was arrested and charged with assault and attempted murder. It was not clear if he had legal representation yet. Attempts to reach family members for comment were not successful. University officials would not confirm his involvement. Interim Coach Alex Mortensen said some players chose to sit out the game but most played to honor graduating seniors. The Blazers lost 48-18.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — James Harden made 10 3-pointers and scored a franchise-record 55 points, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Charlotte Hornets 131-116 hours after 12-time All-Star point guard Chris Paul released a video on social media hinting at retirement after the season ends. Ivica Zubac added 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Clippers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Rookie Kon Knueppel had 26 points to lead the Hornets, who’ve lost five straight. Harden’s 55-point outing was the 11th-highest scoring game of his career. The Clippers' previous single-game scoring record was 52 points.
Former Wake Forest star and 12-year NBA player Rodney Rogers has died at the age of 54. The school announced Saturday that Rogers died the previous day. Rogers had been paralyzed from the shoulders down since a 2008 accident. Rogers died from natural causes tied to the spinal-cord injury he suffered. That's according to a National Basketball Players Association statement on behalf of Rogers’ family. Rogers was the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year in 1993. The “Durham Bull” went on to score nearly 9,500 points in the NBA while being named league sixth man of the year in 2000.
Liverpool’s Premier League title defense has lurched deeper into crisis with a 3-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest. A sixth defeat of the campaign left last season’s runaway champion 11th in the standings and eight points behind leader Arsenal, having played a game more. Goals from Murillo, Nicolo Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White at Anfield consigned Liverpool to a sixth defeat from its last seven games in England’s top flight. To put that into context, Arne Slot’s team only lost four over the entire season last term when winning a record-equaling 20th title.
