
Great Bend Post Sports
In September, the USD 428 Great Bend Board of Education added unified bowling to its sports roster. The sport combines athletes with intellectual disabilities and those without, bowling together as a team. The Panthers won two of their four competitions this season.
On Oct. 12 in Great Bend, the Panthers rolled a 738 to defeat Liberal (725) and Hays (638). The team traveled to Garden City on Oct. 19, finishing first with 719 pins. Liberal placed second (651), and Garden City finished third (650). A week after that, Great Bend placed seventh in Liberal with 573 pins. Garden City won that day with 820 pins, followed by Hays with 769 pins. The Panthers closed out the regular season last Thursday at Hays with a fifth-place finish. Liberal won the day with 843 pins, followed by a pair of Hays teams with 802 and 798 pins. Great Bend finished with a 677.
In its first season around the state, there will be four regional tournaments this week with the top five teams at each site advancing to state. Great Bend will bowl at the Hutchinson regional on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
Great Bend team members are: Saul Mendez, Keaton Wahlmeier, Quinten Miller, Zoey Mayberry, Rionna Rodriguez, Daegon Miller, Brooklyn Mayberry, Brantley Vsetecka, and Kaylin Wahlmeier.
