Making more resources and funding available for communities through the Kansas Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is helping increase safety and improve the health and wellness of students as they walk, bike or roll to school.
The program helps provide the framework for local areas to enhance multimodal infrastructure and non-infrastructure plans now and in the future.
“Being active before school helps students concentrate and improves alertness and memory,” said Ann Katt, KDOT’s SRTS Coordinator. “Students arrive and are ready to learn."
As part of this effort, the first SRTS Strategic Action Plan has been published, which outlines past progress and future strategies. In the last 18 months, a statewide online survey, workshops for advisory committee members and discussions with various focus groups have taken place to engage stakeholders and the public.
“This plan details KDOT’s commitment to providing resources that help support safe communities for students and families of all backgrounds and abilities,” Katt said.
This information will allow KDOT to prioritize efforts and expand multimodal opportunities across the state. People are encouraged to help build the SRTS network:
