It may not be a presidential election year but plenty of local municipal general races in Barton County will be decided in the Nov. 7 General Election. County Election Official Bev Schmeidler said the deadline to vote in that election is fast approaching.

"Oct. 17, just next week, is the last day to register to vote," she said. "So if you have moved, changed your name, haven't been registered and want to, Oct. 17 is the last date we can get you registered to vote in this election."

As per usual, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Advanced voting begins in Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 18 during regular courthouse business hours.

"It is our plan to start that day," Schmeidler said. "That's next Wednesday. We just would like people to call first before they make the trip and just make sure we are up and running, that we have all our machines tested and everything is prepared and ready to go."

Early voting will take place in the old JC Penney building at 1500 Kansas Ave. in Great Bend. Up for grabs in this election are mayor seats, as well as positions on city councils, school boards, the Barton Community College Board of Trustees, and Barton County Extension. Before voting early next week, call the Barton County Clerk's Office at (620) 793-1835.
