During Monday’s public comment section at the Great Bend City Council meeting, resident Gary Mick spoke before the board with concerns in his neighborhood. Mick lives in the 2800 block of Williams Street, just north of Brit Spaugh Park and the 24th and Main intersection.
Mick said there have been a lot
of trees removed from that area, but large stumps remain. To his knowledge,
Mick said there is no city ordinance stating what height tree stumps have to
be.
"If we could amend that particular code or ordinance...when people remove trees, the stump should be no more than six inches off the ground or ground level," said Mick. "That would keep that particular city edition as clean as possible."
Mick also expressed concern with Williams Street, between 24th and
31st, referring to that stretch as a high-speed dragstrip. Eastbound
motorists on 24th Street will sometimes bypass the stoplight at 24th
and Main by turning onto Williams.
"At this particular time of the year, you have all kinds of kids, people walking to Dairy Queen and the city park," said Mick. "I firmly believe it's not if a child or a dog gets hit or hurt, it's when. There was an incident up there a couple of weeks ago where a fella ran up on the porch on 29th Street. Supposedly lost control of his vehicle. You don't lose control doing 30 miles per hour."
Mick requested action be taken in an attempt to slow down motorists on Williams
Street, and invited all the city council members to visit the area.
