The 7th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team clinched its 22nd national tournament appearance with a sweep of 10th ranked Colby Community College (25-21, 26-24, 25-16) Sunday afternoon in the Region 6/Plains District Championship match. The 24th Region 6 title improves Barton to 31-2 on the year in booking a November 20-23 trip to Clarksville, Tennessee, for the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship Tournament. Colby, who won the region/district title last year, slips to 26-4 and now awaits for a possible at-large bid to be announced on Wednesday. Barton chalked up its 26th sweep of the year pleasing the boisterous home crowd behind a balanced effort of a .275 attack with 60 digs and 9 blocks. Four Cougars had six or more recorded kills in the three sets, Phoebe Reyes' 11 leading the way on a .292 attack with Kassidy Nixon posting a 10 kill, 11 dig performance for her team leading 13th double-double of the year.
HOUSTON (AP) — Nothing was going right for Detroit’s Jared Goff on Sunday night against the Houston Texans. The nine-year veteran threw a career-high five interceptions through three quarters and the Lions trailed by 10 points. Instead of wallowing in his mistakes, Goff rallied the Lions to an improbable 26-23 win that was capped by a 52-yard field goal by Jake Bates as time expired. “I had some unfortunate things early, but I’ve been through a whole lot worse than that,” Goff said. “Mentally, I’ve been to the bottom. Some unlucky plays aren’t going to throw me off my game.” The Lions improved to 8-1 for the first time since 1954 with their seventh straight victory overall and fifth in a row on the road. Detroit trailed 23-7 at halftime after Goff threw three interceptions in the first two quarters. He threw two more picks in the third. Nonetheless, the Lions scored 16 straight points to tie it with about five minutes to go on Bates’ 58-yard field goal.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — CeeDee Lamb was unhappy about losing a ball in the sun on an incompletion that helped keep Dallas from scoring a go-ahead touchdown in the first half of a 34-6 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was perturbed that the sun was brought up as an issue once again in his $1.2 billion retractable roof stadium, which has glass doors on either end. AT&T Stadium has an unusual east-west alignment from end zone to end zone, as opposed to most venues being north-south. On clear days, the sun shines in the windows on the west side during the first half of games that kick off in the afternoon. “I couldn’t see the ball. Couldn’t see the ball, at all. The sun,” said Lamb, who ended a preseason-long holdout by signing a $136 million, four-year contract extension in late August. “By the way, we know where the sun is going to be when we flip the coin, so we do know where the damn sun is going to be in our own stadium,” Jones said. “Let’s just tear the damn stadium down and build another one. Are you kidding me?”
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State coach Mike Norvell fired his offensive and defensive coordinators Sunday, one day after a 52-3 loss at then-No. 10 Notre Dame. Norvell dismissed offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller and receivers coach Ron Dugans. “I appreciate the work these three men have provided over the last five years with me at Florida State,” Norvell said in a statement. “Unfortunately, we have not upheld the Florida State standard with our results on the field this season. “I did not make any of these decisions lightly, but I felt changes needed to be made to elevate our program back to where we all desire it to be.” The Seminoles (1-9) have a bye week and then two games remaining, beginning against Charleston Southern. Co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Randy Shannon will assume defensive coordinator duties, and additional responsibilities will be absorbed by remaining staff members.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Paige Bueckers scored 19 of her 22 points in the first half as No. 2 UConn rolled to an 86-49 win over former conference rival South Florida on Sunday. The win was No. 1215 for UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma. That leaves him one shy of tying former Stanford women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer’s college basketball record. Bueckers big opening 20 minutes helped the Huskies to a 43-25 lead at halftime. Ice Brady had the first four points for the Huskies as UConn opened the game on a 9-0 run.
