Great Bend Post Sports
There was Manhattan and there was the rest of the field Thursday in Junction City. The Great Bend boys scored 45 points for sixth place in their track and field season opener. Manhattan more than doubled-up the field with 234.5 points.
Freshman Cooper Onhmacht made a strong debut in the triple jump, beating the field by nearly two feet at 43-3. Just two 5A jumpers had gone further than 40 feet in a light week-one of action. Junior Ben Nicholson placed ninth at 38-7. Ohnmacht also ran 14th in the 100m dash (11.83) and ninth in the 200m dash (24.24). Senior Ramiro Rocho placed eighth in the 200 in 24.13.
Senior Matthew Johnson ran into some big competition in the javelin, placing third on a throw of 150-9 to miss the silver by nine feet. Manhattan senior Samuel Molt won with a throw of 176-6. Sophomore Jacob Hall finished seventh in the shot at 41-11 to miss the bronze by less than two feet.
The Panthers also saw some success in the 3200m run. Sophomore Ismael Ramirez was third in 10:37.75 to miss the silver by 27 seconds. Sophomore Tavon Stroup placed sixth in 10:53.86. Ramirez ran fifth in the 1600 in 4:46.53 to miss the bronze by less than a second. Stroup finished behind him in 4:52.76.
Junior Luis Gonzalez made the 110m hurdle finals for a seventh-place finish in 19.45. The 4x4 team placed fourth in 3:40.52 to miss the bronze by a second.
