
The Barton Community College women's basketball team scored the game's first 10 points to set the tone Monday night at the Fleske Fieldhouse, rolling to a 66–39 victory over Cloud County Community College in Jayhawk Conference action.
Barton improves to 7–13 overall and 5–9 in league play, while Cloud County falls to 8–11 on the season and 4–10 in the KJCCC. The Cougars return to action Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. road trip to Colby Community College before coming back home Saturday to host Coffeyville Community College in a 2:00 p.m. matinee tip.
Barton steadily stretched the margin throughout the night, leading 16–10 after one quarter before turning the second period into the separator, holding Cloud County to just five points while building a 36–15 halftime advantage. The Cougars carried the defensive edge into the third and continued to widen the gap, pushing the margin to 33 points early in the fourth before emptying the bench down the stretch. The 39 points allowed marked Cloud County's second-lowest output in the 86-game series between the programs.
The Cougars were paced by Regina Donanu's efficient 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, adding seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Mary Akinde followed with 12 points and nine rebounds while protecting the paint with three blocks, and Mersadie Spray finished with 10 points and three assists. Christal Long chipped in nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, including Barton's lone three-pointer, while Fortunate Emechete provided a strong interior presence with a career-high 11 rebounds as Barton owned a plus-26 advantage on the glass.
Amanda Makela led a shorthanded T-Bird squad with eight points, while Shea Wurtz and Marilyn Soeken each added seven points and combined for 12 rebounds.
Defensively, Barton held Cloud County to 21.1% shooting (12-of-57) while countering with a 46.6% performance from the floor, including a 57% opening quarter start helping the Cougars take control early.
