Dangerous heat will continue across central Kansas Monday as the National Weather Service has extended an Extreme Heat Warning until 9 p.m. Monday, followed immediately by a Heat Advisory that will remain in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Heat index values are expected to reach 111 degrees Monday afternoon before easing slightly Tuesday, when "feels like" temperatures could still climb to 105 degrees.
The warning covers much of central, south central, east central and southeast Kansas, including the Great Bend area.
The prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions and anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day.
Those who must work or exercise outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned location and schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening hours.
Officials also remind residents to check on family members, neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Drivers should never leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle. Temperatures inside a parked car can become deadly within minutes, even if the windows are cracked.
Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool place immediately and given water if they are alert. If heat stroke is suspected, call 911 immediately, as it is a life-threatening medical emergency.
The Extreme Heat Warning expires at 9 p.m. Monday, but dangerous heat will continue under a Heat Advisory through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
