The Memorial Day holiday is over, and the Great Bend Cemetery staff reminds everyone to pick up flowers and decorations that they placed around gravesites. Anything on the stones or in vases can stay, but everything needs to be picked up off the ground or off the graves so the mowing routine can get back to normal.

Cemetery Operator Michelle Davis said city staff wants to work with the public as much as possible about the deadline to remove items.

"In years past, we had issues with people saying they forgot or didn't know the date," said Davis. "June 4, we're asking the community to come out and pick up their decorations. By June 5, we can finish picking up the cemetery and start mowing."

Items must be removed by this Sunday, June 4. Cemetery staff will be removing all remaining flowers and decorations starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 5.

"The wires in the flowers can get wrapped around out blades," said Davis. "The wires have been known to poke holes in our mower tires. That's why we walk the cemetery first following the Memorial Day deadline."
