The existing ordinance for constructing fences, walls and hedges within
the City of Great Bend has been untouched for many years, but the Great Bend
City Council approved a motion Monday to update the ordinance that will have an impact for property owners on corner lots.
Interim City Administrator Logan Burns said if you own a corner lot, you have
two front yards. On the non-address side of the property, residents can now
construct a fence out to the property line.
"An example of these would be on Broadway," said Burns. "There's a lot of those where the fences do come out from the houses. This would allow them to go out to the property line. We wouldn't have any issues with what I'm going to call the sight triangle. If there is an instance where that does happen, we have the capability to address that."
Another change to the ordinance includes double frontage lots. A double
frontage lot is an interior lot bounded by two or more abutting street lines
that do not intersect.
"Not only will we have that in Amber Meadows when that does get developed along 24th Street, but we have several other spots in town that they back up to a street. This would allow a privacy fence to go along those right-of-ways."
The remaining information in the ordinance was cleaned up for language,
definitions and references that do not exist anymore.
