No. 7 Lady Panther wrestlers place eighth in Topeka

For once, the No. 7 Lady Panther wrestling team was able to avoid top-ranked Dodge City at the 4th Annual Washburn Women's Invitational on Topeka Saturday. The field was still tough. Ninth-ranked Washburn Rural (6-5A) piled up 426.5 points for the win. Sixth-ranked Olathe North (6-5A) scored 294 points for second, and Spring Hill edged No. 7 Fort Scott (4A) 280-277.5 for third place. Great Bend scored 234.5 points for eighth.

Sixth-ranked Camdyn Post made it to the finals at 105 pounds where she was pinned by top-ranked Molly Spader of Washburn Rural. Post went 2-0 in pool matches with a pair of pins.

Freshman Kayle Baldwin finished third at 100 pounds. She pinned her Washburn Rural opponent in the consolation finals. Fort Scott's Caellen Wescoat pinned second-ranked Madalyn Riedinger of Gardner-Edgerton for the title.

Second-ranked Daizy Gomez placed fourth at 130 pounds. She pinned her two pool opponents both in 35 seconds or fewer. Gomez had to forfeit her consolation final match against Washburn Rural. Fifth-ranked Karolina Kendall of Blue Valley Southwest (6-5A) defeated top-ranked Koti Best of Topeka Seaman (6-5A) by forfeit in the finals.

Second-ranked Natalee Daniels pinned her first two opponents at 190 pounds on the way to a fifth-place finish. She was pinned by fifth-ranked Ali Simhiser of Fort Scott (4-1A). Daniels rebounded to pin Topeka Seaman in the fifth-place match.

Keira Leyva placed ninth at 110 pounds, pinning Mill Valley in her final match of the day. Top-ranked Alyssa Calovich of Chapman (4-1A) kept her perfect season intact by pinning fourth-ranked Autumn Wilson of Tonganoxie (4-1A) in the finals.

Braelyn Turner finished 10th at 120 pounds. She lost her final match against Shawnee Mission Northwest in sudden victory in the ninth-place match. Second-ranked Kayla Cramer of Manhattan (6-5A) pinned her Shawnee Mission West opponent in the finals.

Danica Cline placed 10th at 155 pounds. She was pinned by Chapman in the ninth-place match. Washburn Rural's Emily Funk won the bracket. Kirra Stevens came up a point shy of ninth place at 170 pounds. She lost a 4-3 decision to Kansas City Turner in the ninth-place match. Manhattan's Sage Rosario, ranked No. 1 at 155 pounds and unbeaten, pinned fifth-ranked Jacqueline Goodman of Leavenworth for the 170-pound title.

Kaydence Demel finished 14th at 135 pounds. She was pinned by Gardner-Edgerton in the 13th-place match. Top-ranked Kaylan Hitchcock of Olathe North won the bracket.

The Lady Panthers host Liberal in a Western Athletic Conference dual on Thursday.
