The City of Great Bend recently revamped a sidewalk repair program that financially
assists property owners to make repairs to crumbled sidewalks.
There is still a grey area concerning vehicles parking on those sidewalks,
potentially causing some of the wear and tear.
For many citizens, it is common
practice to inch up the right side of your vehicle onto the curb when you park
along the street. Great Bend City Administrator Kendal Francis said while
parking on the sidewalk is not allowed, the city is not actively ticketing
violations.
"It's kind of one of those complaint-driven things, unless it's egregious," said Francis. "If they have the sidewalk completely blocked, absolutely, we're going to address that. But if they put one side of the car up onto the curb, it seems to be common place in some areas of town."
Great Bend contributed $20,000 into the sidewalk cost share program. The plan
provides both residential and commercial property owners a 50% reimbursement of
labor and materials, up to $800, to make repairs to sidewalks. Corner lots are
eligible for up to $1,600.
