In 2017, the Great Bend Recreation Commission sponsored a kite festival
to be part of the annual Party in the Park celebration at Veterans Memorial Park. The kites have returned
each year allowing patrons to see kites, more than 200 feet long, in the air when
there is enough wind.
At Monday’s GBRC board meeting, Great Bend Rec Leisure Director Garet Fitzpatrick said it
might be time to find a new feature for the outdoor festival that lands on the second
Saturday in August.
"I've been looking around a little bit," said Fitzpatrick. "There's a guy that balances everything on his nose and forehead. He went around minor league baseball parks all over. It was incredible what he was balancing on his nose. We also saw a person that does bike tricks."
Fitzpatrick encouraged GBRC board members to notify him if they see or think of
a neat feature to replace the kite festival in the future.
Along with the kite festival, the rec helps sponsor the Oozefest Mud Volleyball
Tournament at Party in the Park.
