Haru Nakano's first collegiate goal provided all the offense needed Wednesday as the sixth-ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team knocked off No. 3 Cowley College 1-0 on a rain-soaked afternoon in Arkansas City.

The top-five road victory improves Barton to 4-1 in KJCCC play and 10-1 overall while handing Cowley its first loss of the season, dropping the Tigers to 2-1-2 in conference play and 5-1-3 overall. The Cougars return home next Wednesday for another top-ranked showdown, hosting No. 5 Garden City Community College in a 1:00 p.m. kick.

Neither side generated a shot on frame through the opening 45 minutes as the teams went to intermission locked in a scoreless battle. Barton produced three shots and two corner kicks in the opening half, with Cowley also attempting three shots while generating one corner.

The Cougars nearly broke through less than five minutes into second-half action as Rafael Calmon rang an attempt off the post. Barton didn't have to wait much longer, finding the decisive strike just over three minutes later.

Taking Shun Imai's pass with 37:06 remaining, Nakano unleashed a 16-yard missile into the upper 90 at the near post for the defender's first collegiate goal, giving Imai his third assist of the season and Barton a 1-0 advantage.

Barton made the one-goal margin stand behind a defensive unit that kept Cowley from putting a single shot on frame. The Tigers generated five second-half attempts but were unable to test Pedro Lisboa, including three opportunities over the final five minutes as the Cougars slammed the door on their third conference road victory.

By the Numbers
Cowley finished with an 8-6 edge in total shots, but Barton produced the match's only two shots on goal while holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lisboa recorded his second shutout of the season without needing a save as the Cougar defense held Cowley without a shot on frame for the full 90 minutes. Masaki Tsuji accounted for Barton's other shot on goal while Calmon's second-half attempt found the post. The Cougars were whistled for just six fouls compared to Cowley's 11.
