From the City of Russell...
The Russell Community Impact Award Committee announce Andy Hurla as the distinguished recipient of the May 2025 Russell Community Impact Award. This award recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations whose exceptional contributions have significantly enriched the fabric of the Russell community.
Andy's multiple nominations describe him as deeply committed to our community and youth. He serves as an exemplary role model and mentor for many in the many roles he fills within our community. Andy's nominations recognized him for his work as an athletic trainer where he has dedicated his time and attention to the youth athletes of our community for the last 15 years, a position he fulfills along side of his already busy schedule as a Physical Therapy Assistant at Russell Regional Hospital. He has endured long hours on the sidelines to ensure the health and well-being of local youth where his focus has assisted with establishing Emergency Action Plans, education for coaches and athletes, hydration protocols, and concussion monitoring.
Andy is also actively involved in supporting our community as a religious education instructor at St. Mary Queen of Angels Church. Andy is also an avid supporter of scouting in Russell and Northwest Kansas. He was previously the Cubmaster for Russell’s Cub Scout Pack 118 and is currently the Scoutmaster for Scouts BSA Troop 133 in Hays. Andy has been recognized for his efforts with scouting at the district and council levels. Additionally, Hurla is a charter member of the Russell County Scouting Association, a nonprofit group that has assumed responsibility for the Russell Scout House and is working to support scouting in Russell County for Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Scouts BSA units.
As the winner of the Russell Community Impact Award, Andy received a $250 donation to the non-profit of his choice. Andy chose the Russell County Scouting Association as the recipient. Andy was presented with a $250 check for the Russell County Scouting Association at the June 18, 2025, city council meeting.
