Timing is everything. A powerful storm moved through Great Bend on July 16. That should have given entities with year-end budgets time to address damage caused by the storm. But busy insurance companies and contractors have shortened that timeline. Tuesday morning, the Barton County Commission agreed to some roof repairs but only if completed by Dec. 31. County Administrator Matt Patzner laid out the issue.

"In July of this year, certain county buildings sustained damage as a result of the hail storm," he said. "Included therein is the roof on the sheriff's office administrative building. After insurance adjusters inspected the roof, it was suggested that repairs be made as soon as possible."

The commission approved $23,578.13 for repairs to be completed by Great Bend's Summit, but only if the work is completed by the end of the year. If it cannot be completed, the county will re-bid the work after the New Year.
