Carl Brandt, age 91

Carl R. Brandt, 91, La Crosse, passed away Monday, July 29, 2024, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

Carl was born Jan. 15, 1933, in La Crosse, the son of Charles L. and Mildred (O’Neil) Brandt. He was a resident of La Crosse since 1961, moving there from Coffeyville. A 1951 graduate of La Crosse Rural High School, La Crosse, he was an electrician and owned and operated Brandt Electric from 1962 to 1996.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 3147, and American Legion Post 33, all of La Crosse. His memberships included Walnut Valley Masonic Lodge 215, Rush Center, and the ISIS Shrine, Salina. Carl was a former police officer for the City of La Crosse, and a former volunteer firefighter for the La Crosse Brookdale Township. He became known as the “Official Ice Cream Man” for the Kansas Honor Flight.

A United States Army veteran, he served from 1952 to 1960, earning the rank of Corporal (T).

On March 9, 1957, he married Mary Ann Depperschmidt at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Liebenthal. She preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2000.

Survivors include: two sons, Richard C. Brandt, La Crosse, and Larry J. Brandt (Sara), Dumas, Texas; one daughter, Patricia A. Crowell (Steve), Clearwater; six grandchildren, Grace Ellis, Hilary Brandt, Sam Brandt, Kevin Powell, Matthew Crowell, and Jacob Crowell; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexander Ellis, Ezra Ellis, Brett Maynard, Emmalee Wood, Atley Crowell, Bristol Crowell, Roman Powell, and Maxwell Brandt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; six brothers, William Brandt, Franklin Brandt, Sam Brandt, John Brandt, Paul Brandt, and Ralph Brandt; and one sister, Mary Burdett.

Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse. A vigil service and rosary will be at 7 p.m.

Church visitation will be Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, from 9 to 9:50 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse.

Funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, with Father Stephen Dabanka officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family requests memorials to the Kansas Honor Flight, or St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse.
