Barton Community College Soccer begins the Region 6 Tournament this weekend, and they'll do so as the top seed in the tournament. The Cougars are ranked third in the country and have won the regular season title with an overall record of 17 wins, one loss, and one tie. That one loss came to Garden City towards the midpoint of Barton's season, but midfielder Lucas Meibom, a sophmore from Denmark, said the loss came at the perfect time for Barton to learn the lessons it had to learn.
"Actually in the beginning, I thought we had a hard start. It was hard to find the goal and win by two goals, like when we played against the teams we played last year. So, this year was a little bit different compared to last year. I thought we did a better job winning by more goals last year. But I think after we got our first loss against Garden City, we actually realized it's not that easy. And everybody wants to beat us because we're a ranked team, in the top 5.
"I also think the loss came at the point. It was right in the middle of the season. We can do better. And we could catch up after if we got the loss then. In the end, maybe it would've hit us harder than in the middle, so we could actually do something."
Barton will host Dodge City in the first round of the Region 6 Tournament on Saturday.
