On Sunday, Sept. 1, at about 6:45 p.m., the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a serious UTV accident just west of the baseball fields in Hoisington. The location was just outside corporate city limits in an open field. Upon arrival, deputies observed a 2021 Can Am Maverick, black in color, that rolled over. Two of the three occupants had been ejected and were in the process of being transported to local hospitals.

The operator of the vehicle was identified as Kevin Seyfert, age 62 of Hoisington. He was ejected from the vehicle. Seyfert was transported to Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington and then flown to a Wichita area hospital. Seyfert died of his injuries Monday, Sept. 2, at about 1:15 p.m.

The passengers were identified as Lavern Boxberger, age 71 of Hoisington and Kenton Renz, age 37 also of Hoisington. Renz was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. Boxberger remained in the vehicle. Boxberger also sustained serious injuries although he was the only occupant that was properly restrained. Both passengers were later transferred to Wichita area hospitals by aircraft.

Investigation at the scene indicates the vehicle was under acceleration and traveling at a high rate of speed when the operator attempted to make a sharp turn to the north. The vehicle went into a skid and overturned. The Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out the possibility that alcohol was a contributing factor. The accident is still under investigation.
