The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) governs the state’s universities,
community colleges and technical colleges. As KBOR prepares for the upcoming
fall school year, Barton Community College President Dr. Carl Heilman said the
board is looking into the transfer of credits between colleges and
universities.
Barton’s agreement with the 19 private universities and colleges in Kansas
accepts all of Barton’s credits. Heilman said there are
loopholes and various reasons why public universities don’t accept certain
credit transfers.
"Compared to the public universities, the private schools are very genuine in wanting to do what's best for students and move them on through the system," said Heilman.
Barton Community College Board of Trustees Chairman Mike Johnson said he always
felt it would take legislation passed to assure all credit hours transfer over
to a four-year university.
"When we go to Topeka and meet with legislators, there is not a meeting that goes by without a legislator making a comment about a child or somebody retaking classes because they wouldn't transfer," said Johnson. "That's probably the biggest complaint we get from legislators."
Heilman said KBOR could act on the issue this summer with changes implemented
as quickly as 2023 or 2024.
