As Barton Community College Vice President of Administration Mark Dean reviewed the latest financial statement with the Board of Trustees last week, the oil revenue the college receives was mentioned. Barton has two oil wells on the Camp Aldrich property, northeast of the college.
In the December financial statement, the previous month oil revenue Barton received was just under $2,900.
"Camp Aldrich was purchased or donated with a land/water conversation grant through the federal government and through the State of Parks," said Dean. "We're limited to what we can do at Camp Aldrich. If we want to make any changes we have to get approval from the federal government and the state."
Last year at this time, the revenue was listed at $3,000.
"We petitioned a few years back to drill for oil out there," said Dean. "We have two wells currently."
One of the stipulations for allowing the college to have oil wells on the property is any revenue from the wells has to be used on improvements or maintenance at Camp Aldrich.
There are 290 acres at Camp Aldrich, and Dean said the majority of the land is tax exempt from property taxes.
