On Tuesday, Sept. 27, at about 5:15 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 3322 Railroad Avenue in reference to a reported disturbance. Individuals at the scene reported a female had been struck by a vehicle and there had also been a stabbing.

Upon arrival, deputies located the suspect vehicle as it was attempting to flee the scene. The driver was taken into custody.

Witnesses at the scene stated the driver of the vehicle, identified as Justin Merritt, age 42 of Hays, accelerated toward the victim several times, at one point striking her causing the victim to go over the hood of the vehicle. Further investigation indicated the suspect had several self-inflicted lacerations to an arm. It appears that Merritt and the female victim had been involved in a domestic dispute.

Great Bend Fire Department EMS service was called to the location to examine Merritt. After medical treatment, Merritt was transported to the Barton County Jail without incident. He was booked on charges of aggravated battery and is being held in lieu of a $40,000 bond.
