The second welcome sign entering Great Bend is in the works as city officials are waiting for the structure to be built.
The Harms Trust paid the entire $38,724 purchase for the two signs. The first “Welcome to Great Bend” was constructed in late February on US 281 Highway coming into town from the north.
Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes says the second sign should be
installed this year along US 56 Highway coming from the southwest.
"We were looking at different options and found that the personal property near the Great Bend Panther state champions sign was the best option," said Hayes.
Mark’s Custom Signs will install the sign once the rock for the structure is
obtained.
"We have permission, but are still trying to get a hold of the rock," added Hayes. "With COVID-19, they have had a little bit of a shortage on supplies."
With six major entrances to Great Bend, the city hopes to eventually obtain
funding to place signs at each entry.
