LOS ANGELES (AP) — Midway through a season of heartbreaking losses, major injuries and maddeningly inconsistent play, the Miami Dolphins mostly put it all together on Monday night. While their preseason Super Bowl aspirations are still in grave danger of slipping away, the Dolphins’ gritty 23-15 victory over the Los Angeles Rams demonstrated to Miami’s key players that they still might have a shot to make something out of this very trying year. Tyreek Hill caught a short touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa in the third quarter to end the longest scoring drought of his career, and the Dolphins (3-6) kept Los Angeles out of the end zone while snapping their three-game losing streak with just their second victory in eight games.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who awaits trial in a sexual abuse case, was arrested for his involvement in an armed altercation in the Dominican Republic countryside, police said Monday. Meregirdo Espinosa, a Dominican police spokesman, told The Associated Press the altercation happened in a parking lot in San Juan de la Maguana, a city that is located 116 miles (187 kilometers) west of Santo Domingo. Franco was arrested Sunday. Another man and a woman were also detained, and two firearms were seized, police said. Espinosa said one of the guns presumably belonged to Franco, who was allegedly fighting with the other man over the woman’s attention. Police didn’t say whether there were injuries. The 23-year-old Franco is scheduled to go to trial Dec. 12 in the northern province of Puerto Plata in a sexual abuse case involving a 14-year-old girl. He was also charged with sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama had another monstrous outing that put him in the record books among some impressive company. Wembanyama had 34 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and three blocks as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Sacramento Kings 116-96 on Monday night. It was Wembanyama’s 82nd career game, giving the 7-foot-3 No. 1 pick in 2023 from France a full season of games played. And with his outstanding performance, Wembanyama joined Oscar Robertson, Kareer Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Blake Griffin and Sidney Wicks as the only players in league history with 1,700 points, 800 rebounds and 300 assists in their first 82 games.
Dana Holgorsen will take over as Nebraska’s offensive coordinator for the rest of the season with Marcus Satterfield remaining on the staff, coach Matt Rhule announced Monday. Rhule brought in the former West Virginia and Houston coach last week to do an analysis of the Cornhuskers’ struggling offense, which has underperformed with five-star freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola since Big Ten play began. The Huskers are 14th in total offense and 15th in scoring in conference games in the 18-team Big Ten, and Satterfield had faced mounting criticism for his play-calling. “I just think this is an area not at the level we wanted and I went and found someone I trust,” Rhule said at his weekly news conference. Satterfield, previously the offensive coordinator at South Carolina, is part of the original staff hired by Rhule two years ago. In Satterfield’s 21 games as play-caller, the Huskers have averaged 20.4 points per game to rank 124th out of 134 Bowl Subdivision teams and 331 yards per game to rank 115th, according to Sportradar.
