Barton Community College Athletic Director Trevor Rolfs has announced plans to retire in June 2027, concluding 16 years at the helm of the Cougars' athletic department.
"My time at Barton serving as Athletic Director has been special to say the least and has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional career," Rolfs remarked. "While I will certainly miss all those associated with athletics here at Barton internally and externally, I am excited about what the next chapter of life has in store. Finishing the race strong are words we hear in this profession often, and I plan to do just that!"
Since taking over the department in summer 2011, Rolfs has helped strengthen Barton's success in competition and in the classroom while making community involvement a priority across its athletic programs.
Most recently, the Cougars captured two NJCAA national championships this past spring, bringing the total during Rolfs' tenure to seven of the college's 62 national titles. Barton teams have also won 42 conference titles, 39 region titles and 10 district titles under his leadership. Including national academic titles, the department has earned more than 100 championships during his tenure.
Barton has been a consistent presence among the top NJCAA programs in overall athletic achievement, finishing in the top three of the NATYCAA Daktronics Cup standings for seven consecutive years through the 2023-24 academic year.
Academic achievement and community service have remained central to Rolfs' expectations. Barton's athletic department has consistently maintained a grade point average above 3.0, while its student-athletes have earned numerous academic All-America honors. In 2022-23, Barton led the KJCCC in cumulative GPA at 3.34.
Barton student-athletes also contribute more than 3,000 hours of community service annually. Their work includes partnerships with area elementary schools, celebrated most recently during a Community Engagement Night held in conjunction with a home basketball game.
College President Dr. Marcus Garstecki thanked Rolfs for his service and praised the student-athletes' accomplishments beyond competition.
"I want to thank Trevor for his sixteen years of service to Barton Community College and Barton athletics," Garstecki said. "Most importantly, our student-athletes have excelled in the classroom and have been great representatives of Barton in our communities."
Garstecki also praised the advance notice Rolfs provided. "I appreciate the lead time that Trevor has provided us with his decision, which will help us identify the right individual to fill the role after this year. Barton athletics has a rich history that we are proud of, and we are committed to continuing the tradition."
Rolfs' tenure has also brought major investments in Barton's athletic facilities. He secured more than $3.3 million in donor gifts and helped guide a facilities master plan developed following a 2018 evaluation. Its first phase, completed in fall 2025, included upgraded locker rooms, a Champions Hallway, a new concessions area, and a Cougar Den and Hall of Fame Room celebrating Barton's athletic history.
Other projects completed during his tenure include a 15,000-square-foot indoor practice facility and turf surfaces for the baseball and softball fields. The master plan calls for additional improvements, including a new strength training facility and upgrades to the track and soccer complex, to support the department's continued growth.
