From the city of Great Bend
As spring cleaning is in full effect, the city of Great Bend Public Works Department reminds residents of the proper procedures and rules associated with its compost site. In accordance with Permit #808 issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), the compost facility may only accept grass, leaves, brush and tree limbs.
There are restrictions on the size of tree limbs allowed as branches must not exceed six inches in diameter or eight feet in length.
Recently, prohibited items have been improperly disposed of at the site. Forbidden items include construction material – such as metal, shingles, lumber and paper products – as well as tires, trash bags, plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
Those who discard unacceptable materials at the compost site will be subject to prosecution. Violations are classified as a Class A offense under the Uniformed Plumbing Code and City Ordinance No. 4356.
While the City encourages citizens to remove excess waste from their property, it is essential to follow compost regulations to maintain the city’s KDHE permit. The KDHE conducts routine inspections and may fine or revoke authorization if the site is not compliant with the agreed upon permit.
The Great Bend Compost is located at 97 S.W. 5th Ave. and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Free compost is also available, but it is a self-load service and individuals must bring their own containers.
