The No. 6 Barton Community College men's soccer team used a pair of late first-half goals to seize control Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 4-1 road victory at Dodge City Community College.
The Cougars' four-goal performance marked their highest scoring output in the series since 2018, securing a second consecutive victory over the Conquistadors while snapping a two-match losing streak in Dodge City.
Barton improves to 2-1 in KJCCC play and 8-1 overall while Dodge City slips to 1-2 in conference action and 3-4-2 overall. The Cougars continue their road swing Wednesday with an 8:00 p.m. kickoff at Seward County Community College.
After generating numerous scoring opportunities throughout the opening half, including a penalty kick drawn by Masaki Tsuji that was subsequently denied by the Dodge City goalkeeper midway through the frame, Barton finally broke through with 5:26 remaining as Yuto Saeki's steal sparked a counterattack. Saeki threaded a pass ahead to Rafael Calmon, whose nifty footwork created the opening for his fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Cougar advantage.
Less than three minutes later, Barton doubled its lead off its eighth corner kick of the half. Calmon's back-post delivery was met by a diving Luan Sakuramoto, whose header redirected the ball toward goal for Shun Imai to blast home his fifth tally of the season with 2:37 remaining, giving the freshman Sakuramoto his first collegiate assist.
The Cougars carried the 2-0 advantage into intermission behind a commanding 12-1 edge in shots, including a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Calmon struck again just 8:50 into second-half action, collecting Masaki Tsuji's through ball before launching a strike into the upper 90 for his fifth goal of the season and a commanding 3-0 Barton lead.
The Cougars added their final tally with 4:19 remaining as freshman Yuta Endo rose to meet sophomore Vitor Bertoldo's corner kick, heading home his first collegiate goal off Bertoldo's first collegiate assist to extend the margin to 4-0.
Dodge City avoided the shutout in the final three seconds, connecting on a long pass leading to a chip shot over Pedro Lisboa, spoiling the sophomore's bid for his fourth clean sheet of the season.
By the NumbersBarton dominated the offensive opportunities, outshooting Dodge City 23-5 overall and 11-2 in shots on goal while generating a 14-7 advantage in corner kicks. Calmon paced the Cougar attack with his second career two-goal performance and first of the season, adding an assist for a career-high five-point afternoon. Saeki, Sakuramoto, Tsuji and Bertoldo each contributed an assist, while Imai and Endo rounded out Barton's scoring with one goal apiece.
