Missed opportunities proved costly Wednesday afternoon as the Barton Community College women's soccer team saw a two-goal advantage slip away before settling for a 2-2 draw with Coffeyville Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The result keeps the Cougars unbeaten through six matches at 2-0-4 overall and 0-0-3 in Jayhawk Conference play with three points, while the Red Ravens move to 5-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play with four points. Barton will look to extend its unbeaten streak on the road Sunday with a 3:00 p.m. conference matchup at Dodge City Community College.
The Cougars wasted little time grabbing the early advantage, needing just 4:33 to cash in on their second corner kick of the afternoon. Maki Kimura's service into the box found the unmarked head of Ana Luiza Gori, who redirected the offering into the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Barton continued generating the better of the early opportunities before adding to its advantage in the 35th minute. Juilette Rouchon's corner kick was deflected centrally to the top of the 18-ayrd box, where a charging Gwladys Dumont stepped into the loose ball and laced a right-footed missile inside the left post for her second goal of the season.
The momentum began to swing just 4:41 later as the Red Ravens took advantage of Barton's inability to clear the ball out of danger. Keila Intirago collected the loose ball, quickly turning and firing an attempt off the inside of the near post and into the net to cut the margin heading into the break.
Coffeyville carried the momentum into the second half and needed just 9:30 to pull even. Ruby Danka's service into the box took a high hop, allowing Intirago to beat Lucie Gillig to the ball and head home her second of the afternoon to knot things up at 2-2.
The complexion of the match changed just over five minutes later as Ella Swift broke behind the Red Raven backline for a one-on-one opportunity. Coffeyville goalkeeper Paige Stewart took Swift down before she could get an attempt away, drawing a red card and leaving the Red Ravens to play the final 30:23 with 10 players.
Barton immediately went searching for the go-ahead marker, putting three shots on frame over the next 10 minutes. Rouchon had the first look denied by replacement goalkeeper Isabelle Grundy before Mikka Kolle and Gori were turned aside on consecutive attempts just 55 seconds apart.
Despite playing with the extra attacker, the Cougars were unable to capitalize. Barton produced four more attempts over the final 20 minutes, including a Gori header in the 81st minute and a pair of Kimura chances, but none found the target as the 2-2 deadlock held through the final horn.
By the Numbers
Barton finished with a 15-9 advantage in total shots while both sides placed seven attempts on frame. Gori paced the Cougar attack with four shots and two on goal, while Dumont added three attempts and Kolle put both of her shots on frame. Gillig recorded five saves between the pipes over 81:20 of action while Graciela Medina logged a stretch of 8:40 without facing an attempt.
